Inktober 2023

This year’s art project explores consistency through medium and format.

Working primarily in pen and ink with watercolour or Chinese ink on letterbox-aspect Khadi paper, I aimed to develop a cohesive visual language across the series.

The wide 5:2 format proved creatively challenging at times, pushing me to rethink composition and approach. Through embracing these formal limitations, I was able to focus my efforts and complete most pieces ahead of midnight deadlines.

While intensive, this daily artistic practice has been rewarding. I now look forward to some well-deserved rest and reflection this November, before beginning new creative endeavours.

Another month of mayhem. I started off trying to find a more decorative style but time and geography ended up with me doing more painting, especially with acrylics. I never thought of it as my style, but it seems like if I'm unsure I'll always default to pen and ink plus watercolour.

Let's do this again—Inktober 2021 with the official list of prompt words!

My drawing technique has improved this year, or you can say I'm making fewer mistakes*. I probably spent around 3 hours on average each day working on the project, including preparatory sketches, looking for reference material, and thinking time.

Paintings

In paint, I usually work with acrylics or watercolour. I use Golden Open slow-drying acrylics and Winsor & Newton watercolour pans.

We're still in pseudo-lockdown, so why not do some arting?

This time I did all the pictures in a hard-bound Khadi Paper pad. This makes a nice memento, but it's also hard to exhibit or sell any of the finished works.

Day 1 was my favourite picture, but there are some other good ones in there, as well as several disasters.

I hadn't heard of "Inktober" before 2019, but it seemed up my street, despite not being Sketchy February! But why did they choose a month with 31 days?

My second attempt at a daily drawing challenge, as part of a bigger scheme of daily challenges through 2016, which eventually fizzled out. I was out of practise drawing at the start of February but gradually got some muscle memory back.

Most of the days’ ideas are improvised, but towards the end of the month friends contributed ideas and requests.

I think this was the first time I tried to do a daily drawing challenge. I chose February, as the shortest month, and blogged the pictures to Posterous, which was unfortunately shut down after Twitter bought them. I've lost the original digital copies, but I managed to rescan most of the physical originals from various sketchpads. Digital archiving is no joke!

Day 31 / Award

Collecting my award for completing my 7th consecutive Inktober. Fairly sure I completed every day on time. What’s that Chewy? Yes, I must be mad!

Day 30 / Vacant / St. Peter’s Seminary

I visited in 2014 and did some sketches at the time, though nothing as intricate. God knows what state the building is in now. Returning to Nature. This attempt needed a freer approach, you really want the paint running down the board.

Day 29 / Lesson

I recently have been learning more about roof construction than I ever wanted to know.

Please consult a structural engineer before designing a roof truss based on these drawings.

Day 25 / Inferno

In the Prelude to Hell of Dante’s Inferno, Dante is driven down to hell by three beasts symbolising weakness of will, violence and fraudulence.

Day 24 / Rowdy

Had to trawl through a lot of CCTV footage for this one. You don’t get these kinds of poses at life drawing class.
